RETURN OF THE
READ/WRITE ERROR
¶1How often haven't you seen that ugly
requester.. "read/write error" ? It
ruins everything, it makes you go mad,
it gives you a blackout of furiosity!
It appeared again, on my sourcedisk!
It has done it one time before, then I
nearly lost everything.
Luckily there are recovery programs
like DiskSalv, FixDisk and some other
minor programs. I managed to rescue
the disk, fortunately.
¶3 HOW TO AVOID READ/WRITE ERRORS
¶2 ----------------------------------
¶1There are some things you could do to
avoid read/write errors: Always make
a backup of important disks that you
use a lot (sourcedisks, Always use
quality disks for important files! Do
¶3NOT ¶1use any grey, noname disks. These
are the ones with the highest
read/write percentage! (That's why
they are so cheap!)
Blue noname disks are one level
above grey, but not good enough! Use
quality disks, like TDK, EverData,
SKC! Use HD disks if your drive can
handle them! Don't use noname disks
for anything but not-so-important
files!
¶3NEVER ¶1take the disk out, or reset
while the drive ¶3LED ¶1is lit! No matter
if the drive is writing or reading!
That's what I did, and I almost lost
everything!
¶3NEVER ¶2start a program i.e. from
Assembler when the drive ¶3LED ¶2is lit!
The program may crash, and then it's
that wellknown pain..
¶3 HOW TO REPAIR A DAMAGED DISK
¶2 ------------------------------
¶1For repairing a disk, you should use
FixDisk or DiskSalv. They are the
only programs which is trustable.
There are some other programs which
recovers lost files, i.e. LastHope.
Unfortunately they never do what you
want them to do; recover files
properly.
If there's only a few files you want,
and the requester shows "Not A DOS
Disk" - And you have an Action Replay,
this is what you could do:
I just load the file to a free memory
area, and save it to another disk
using the "SM" command. This is
possible because Action Replay doesn't
use trackdisk.device, but it's own
disk routines.
¶3 OTHER TRICKS
¶2 ----------------
¶1I read somewhere that if a file has a
read/write error, and you have an
extra drive, you should try loading
the file from DF1:/2:/3: since it is
less used that the internal drive.
¶3 BEWARE
¶2 ----------
¶1Beware if the file has got a
read/write error, and the drive isn't
making that annoying "schrkk, sckhrrk"
sound, it could possibly be a virus!
Also, if you are sure that it isn't
a virus, it's easier to recover a file
with the "soft" read/write error than
the "hard" one (schrkk..)
Beware of the.. (loud orchestra
music) ... Read/Write error!
